Itâs my genuine privilege to present before you the report of the various activities during the academic year 2013-14 of Kerala University College of Teacher Education, Kayamkulam.
Faculty details

Beginning of a New Academic YearâŚ
The new academic year commenced on 25th November 2013. 165 students were admitted during the year. A small function was organized & was inaugurated by Principal Dr. Sunith Kumar G. N. in which he explained the mandate and functioning of the college to new students and their parents. College Development Committee members for the academic year were selected with Dr. Sunith Kumar G. N., Principal as the President, Shri. Abdulla as the Vice-President, Shri. C. Vijayan Pillai as the Auditor, Smt. Bindu S. Nair as the Secretary, Shri. Siyar Trikkunnappuzha, Shri. B. Sasidharan Pillai, Smt. Rethi S. Nair, Shri. Muralidhas J., Smt. Kumari Shobha A R., Smt. Sabeena S. & Dr. Smitha J. M as the Executive members and Smt. Jayalekshmy C. L., the Administrative officer. The academic programmes to be conducted in the new academic year were also discussed in that meeting. The parents promised to extend their complete co-operation to the developmental activities of the college.
Self-reflection
A self â reflection gathering was arranged during one of the initial days to familiarize each other.
Morning Assembly
Every day academic activities began with the prayer. Morning assembly was conducted during every Thursdays in which all students and teachers take part. The assemblies conducted optional-wise and a topic of current interest was presented to improve the communication skills and to be in tune with the current affairs.
Procession â School Youth Festival
In connection with School Youth Festival (Sub-district), on 3rd December 2013, all the students and teachers including the Principal participated in the procession which started from MSM School and proceeded via market road which ended at Govt. Higher Secondary School, Kayamkulam. Our college was also a venue for various competitions in the Youth festival. All the students shared the responsibilities to make the event a grant success.
College Union Election
College Union Election was held on 4th December 2014. All students whole heartedly participated in the process. Elected members were Maheen Kannu (Chairperson), Aparna Ajay (Vice chairperson), Bhagyalekshmi (General Secretary), Chinnu (Joint Secretary), Tessy John (Arts Club Secretary), Siju H (Literary Club Secretary), Subin Babu (Sports Club Secretary) and Rajalekshmi R (Magazine Editor)
Oath-taking Ceremony – The college union oath taking ceremony was held in the college auditorium on 6th December 2013. Dr. Sunith Kumar G.N., Principal presided over the function. All the union members took their oath. Felicitations were made by Smt. Hena B, Staff Adviser, Smt. Deepa U, Staff Secretary and Smt. Chitra, Magazine Editor.
World Arabic Day Celebrations
World Arabic day was celebrated on 18th December 2013. A speech on significance of the language was presented by College Chairperson Shri. Maheen Kannu. Recitation of Arabic song & Verses from Quran and display of charts depicting the significance of the day were also made.
Human Rights Day Celebrations
World Human Rights day was celebrated in the campus on 10th December 2013. Shri. Muralidas, Lecturer in General Education & Dr. Simon Tharakan, Lecturer in Physical Education delivered speech about the significance of the day. College Union members shared their views on different aspects of Human rights.
Physical Science students grabbed first position in the chart presentation competition organized in connection with the Human Rights Day. Power point presentation and Quiz competition were also conducted.
Energy Conservation Day – Competition
A Pencil drawing competition was conducted in the campus as part of âEnergy Conservation day Celebrationsâ on 13th December 2013. The prize winners were: I Prize â Gopika Roy (English)⌠II Prize Lekshmi Krishnan (Physical Science)⌠III Prize- Meenu (Natural Science).
Initiatory Practice
The initiatory practice was carried out on January 7-10 at R.V.S.M.H.S., Prayar, Pope Pious H.S., Kattanam, V.V.H.S., Thamarakulam, Boyâs H.S. Karunagappally, Girlâs H.S., Karunagappally, S.V.H.S. Kayamkulam, M.S.M.H.S. Kayamkulam, Govt Boyâs H.S., kayamkulam, Govt. Girlâs H.S., Kayamkulam, G.H.S.S., Haripad, C.K.H.S., Cheppad and Panchayath H.S., Pathiyoor.
Christmas Day Celebrations
Christmas day celebration was held on 19th December 2013. The occasion was inaugurated by Rev. Fr. Jobin Prumpalathussery, Pandy Fathima Matha Church; other office bearers of the college presided over. The performances by our Christmas Papa added more color to the programme. After the morning session variety entertainments were performed. Christmas gifts were exchanged; Carol song and Tableau competitions were conducted.
National Youth Day Celebration
In connection with 150th Birth Anniversary celebrations of Swami Vivekananda, a one-day seminar was organized on 21st January 2014 in collaboration with Sports and Youth Affairs, Govt. of Kerala and Ramakrishna Mission. The function was inaugurated by Swami Mahad Vasudev Nanth, Rama Krishna Mission, Calcutta. Shri. S. Hariharan, District Convener, Shri. P. R. Parameswara Kurup, District Committee Member, Shri. C. Aswini Dev, Committee Member took class on life, personality and philosophical thoughts of Swami Vivekananda.
Health Awareness Programme
A one-day seminar on âHealth Awarenessâ was organized on 22nd January 2013 in association with National Rural Health Mission, Alappuzha. The function was inaugurated by Dr. Ganamurali, Consultant Gynaecologist THQ, Kayamkulam. The first session handled by Dr. Vidhya â the topics were âPromotion of Normal delivery vs LSCSâ, âLife Style diseases and Remedial Measuresâ and âGeriatric Careâ.
Film festival
A one-day film festival was organized in the college auditorium on 29th January 2013 with the objective to encourage student teachers to think and share learning problems in Children. Two films were shown which included Tare Zameen par (Hindi) and Karate Kid (English). Student teachers also gave power point presentations on various topics like History of Films, Bollywood films and Hollywood films.
House Formation
The students were divided into four houses – Ruby, Sapphire, Diamond and Emerald. Teachers were given charges. The aim was to encourage students to work together, share responsibility, and inculcate healthy competitive spirit and enjoyment. House-vice competitions to be held throughout the academic year & the best performing house will be given prize. A house-wise patriotic song competition was held on 31st January 2013. All students took part with great enthusiasm.
Blog creation
An arts blog with the address âkuctekayamkulamcenterâ was inaugurated in order to encourage prospective teachers to share and express their opinions and hone their thinking skills.
College Union Inauguration
Inauguration of College Union, Arts, Sports and Literary Clubs was held on 4th February 2014. Formal inauguration of all these was done by Dr. Varghese Perayil (Member Syndicate, UoK), Master Minon (Cine-Artist), Shri. A R. Somanathan (Assoc. Prof. MSM College) and Prof. Kozhissery Ravindranath (Dean, VNCE).
National Science Day Celebrations â Fostering Scientific Temper
A one-day seminar on âAcculturation of Scientific and Social Self: Nurturing Scientific Temper as a way of Lifeâ was organized in the campus in connection with National Science day celebration on 6th February 2014. The seminar was sponsored by Kerala State Council for Science Technology and Environment and Department of Science and Technology, Govt. of India.
The function was inaugurated by Prof. George Varghese, Director, KSCSTE who delivered a motivating & mind-boggling speech. Shri. M. Abdulla, Vice President CDC delivered the Felicitation speech. Thematic sessions included discussion of topics like âScientific Temper as a Life Styleâ, âScientific Research Trends/Gapsâ, âEffect of Liquid Waste on Agricultureâ and âScience Education in the 21st centuryâ handled by Dr. Rosamma Philip, Dr. S. Anas and Dr. Mollykutty T.M. respectively. This great day of inspiration ended with the Valedictory Session which was inaugurated by Dr. Chandrika Devi Amma, Principal, KUCTE, Adoor. I specially congratulate Smt. Deepa V, Assistant Professor in Natural Science for effectively co-ordinating the programme.
Artâs corner
The artâs club of the college started a new venture in the campus in the name of âArtâs Cornerâ to create awareness about various arts forms⌠matters related to 12 areas which include Dance, Music, DramaâŚetc were given priority to be displayed in the artâs corner board. Each optional subject students are in charge of the board every week and evaluation is done.
Counseling on Adolescent Mental Health Issues
As an initiative to provide counselling to the student teachers on mental health problems, a programme was organized in association with Child Development Centre (CDC), Medical College Thiruvananthapuram on 7th February 2014. The formal function was inaugurated by Shri. P. Reghunath, Member Syndicate, University of Kerala. The sessions on âAdolescent Counsellingâ and âHealthy Livingâ were handled by Dr. M. K. C. Nair, Director (CDC) and Dr. G. Suresh Kumar, Registrar (CDC) respectively. The programme served in itsâ purpose with the remarkable classes by the renowned doctors.
Community services
The students, teaching & the non-teaching staff contributed food packets to the inmates of Govt. Taluk Hospital, Kayamkulam on 17th Feb 2014.
Against Domestic Violence
A seminar on gender-based violence management was organized in the campus in association with Bhoomika on 4th March 2014. The topics âGender and Sexâ & âPhysical Healthâ were handled by Dr. Anand & Smt. Vasanthakumari Amma respectively.
Merit Day
College merit day was organized in the campus on 18th March 2014. Smt. S. Syamala, Joint Registrar, University of Kerala inaugurated the function. Key note address was delivered by Prof. Shaik Ahamed, Principal, MSM College, Kayamkulam. Meritorious students of academic year 2012-2013 were awarded. Kum. Fathimamol who secured highest mark received the ever-rolling trophy. The students who secured distinction in each optional subject were also given prizes. Prizes were also distributed to students of current academic year who secured ranks in University exams.
Model Examinations â First Semester
The model examinations for the first semester were conducted during 19-25 March 2014.
Annual Athletic Meet
The Annual Athletic Meet was conducted on 28th March 2014 and was inaugurated by Dr. P. Sunil Kumar (Member Senate, UoK). Several events were conducted and at the end of the day, Sapphire house emerged to be the champions. The Valedictory session had Shri. K. Jayamohan, Senior Lec.in Phy. Edn, KUCTE, Nedumangad as the Chief Guest. Dr. Simon Tharakan A. S. (Guest Lect. in Phy Edn.) co-ordinated the events.
College News Letter âZESTâ- First Issue Release
A College biannual News Letter âZESTâ was formally released by Shri. Saifudeen Kunju, Former Syndicate member, University of Kerala in a function organized in the College Auditorium on 4th April 2014. Dr. Sunith Kumar, Principal presided over the function. Sri. Murali Das, Assistant Professor in General Education, Smt. Hena B, Staff Advisor, Smt. Jayalakshmy, Administrative Officer, Dr. Smitha J. M., Sub âEditor, Ms. Aparna Ajay, Vice-Chairperson and Ms. Chinnu, Joint secretary delivered the felicitations. Mr. Siju, Literary Club Secretary, College Union delivered the vote of thanks.
First Semester University B. Ed Degree Examination
The first semester University B. Ed Degree Examinations were held during 25-30 April 2014 and 2-3 May 2014.
Study Tour
After the tight and hefty academic activities in the First Semester followed by University exams, a one-day study trip was arranged on 7th May 2014 with the intention that an in-depth exploration of nature and history is an inevitable experience for a prospective teacher. The destination selected for the tour was Ernakulam. The spots visited included Central Marine Fisheries Research Institute (CMFRI), Marine Drive, Cochin Synagogue at Mattanchery and Alappuzha beach.
Residential Community Living Camp
A Four Day-Residential Community Living Camp â MYTHRI- 2014â was organized in the college campus during 20-23 May 2014 as is directed in the revised B.Ed. Curriculum 2013 of Kerala University. The camp was inaugurated by Smt. Saira Nujumuddin, Chairperson, Kayamkulam Muncipality. Various personalities like Sri. K. Pushpadas, Counsellor, Kayamkulam Municipality, Smt. Bhamini Sourabhan, Chairperson, Education Standing Committee, Smt. Jaleela Sakeer, Chairperson, Health Standing Committee, Sri. M. Abdulla, Vice-President, CDC, Smt. Sherlikutty, Principal, GBHSS, Kayamkulam, Smt. J. Sudha, Headmistress, GBHS, Kayamkulam and Smt. Jayalakshmy. C. L, Administrative Officer attended the function. Smt. Sobha A. R., Assistant Professor in Hindi delivered vote of thanks. Various academic as well as entertaining and sports activities were arranged on these days. Sessions included seminars on topics like âGuidance and Counselling, Life Skills, Simple ways of Excellence and other programmes like Kaviyarangu, Mock Parliament, Agriculture, Thalalayam, Procession, Survey, Medical CampâŚetc. Validectory function was inaugurated by Smt.Beena Perumpuzha, Senior Faculty, KUCTE, Kumarapuram.
A booklet covering the details of the entire programmes of the four-day Residential Community Living Camp was published and released on 25th October 2014.
Observance of World Environment Day
In connection with World Environment Day, a seminar on âAberrations in Global Climate and Oddments of Biorhythmsâ was jointly organized by Kerala State Council for Science Technology and Environment and KUCTE, Kayamkulam on 4th June 2014 in the college auditorium. The function was inaugurated by Prof. D. Thankamoney, Former Head, College of Engineering & Former Secretary, Kerala State Pollution Control Board. Smt. Hena B., Assistant Professor in Education delivered the Welcome Speech. Mr. Maheen Kannu, College Union Chairman, Sri. M. Abdulla, Vice-President, CDC; Smt. Shanthi Nair, Assistant Professor, KUCTE, Aryad, Smt. Sherlikutty, Principal, GBHSS, Kayamkulam, Smt. Sabeena, Assistant Professor in Arabic and Smt. Jayalekshmy C. L, Administrative Officer delivered felicitations. Smt. Chitra I, Assistant Professor in Physical Science delivered the Vote of Thanks. The Inaugural function was followed by thematic sessions on âImpact of Climate Change on Environment,â âClimate Change and its impact on Agricultureâ and âImpact of Climate Change on Biodiversity of Keralaâ. My special congratulations are to Smt. Hena B, Assistant Professor in Education for effectively co-ordinating the programme.
Alumni Association
Alumni Association was formed on 14th June 2014. Dr. G. N. Sunith Kumar, Principal was elected as president, Sri. Sarath Kumar as Vice-President, Smt. Shimithakumari, Asst. Prof. in Social Science as Secretary and Miss. Anju V. as Joint Secretary. Sixteen Executive Members and Teaching staff were included in the Monitoring Committee. The function was inaugurated by Sri. M. Abdulla, CDC Vice-president. Smt. Neethi. S. Lal, Asst. Prof. in Mathematics and Ms. Aparna Ajay, Union chairperson delivered felicitation speech. Ms. Tessy John, Artâs Club Secretary delivered the Vote of Thanks. Students who studied in the institution from 1997 to 2013 attended the function and shared their wonderful experiences at the college.
Teaching Practice 2013 -14
Teaching Practice of the academic year was from on 16th July 2014 to 14th August 2014. It gave practical experience to trainees about different problems related to school and classrooms, they get exposed to the studentsâ problems, they learned how to apply philosophical, psychological and management principles while teaching, etc.
Nature Camp
A group of forty students, three teachers and one non-teaching staff enjoyed Nature Study Camp organized by Kerala forest and Wild life department of Govt. of Kerala on 9th and 10th August 2014. Shendurney Wild Life Sanctuary, Tenmala was the destination. Tenmala is a tourist place near Punalur town in Kollam. Thenmala is the first planned eco-tourism destination in India. Students and teachers enjoyed boating, trekking, cultural programmes and various classes on environment. Dr. Araham Thomas, Associate Professor, Peet Memorial Training College coordinated the camp.
Independence Day Celebrations
On August 15th 2014, the 68th Independence Day was celebrated in the College campus with great pride. The national flag was hoisted by Principal.
Seminar on Breast Feeding
A seminar on breast feeding was organized in the college auditorium with the sponsorship of DMO, Alapuzha on 24th August 2014. Smt. Remiya Beegum, Mass Media Officer, DMO, Alapuzha inaugurated the function. Dr. Sreeprasad, Pediatritian, DMO, Alapuzha took class on breast feeding. A lullaby writing competition was conducted. Ms. Chaithra, Natural Science â optional won first prize.
Community Services â Visit to Gandhi Bhavan
As a part of community service, students in the campus collected clothes from their classmates, teachers and non-teaching staff and donated to Gandhi Bhavan inmates. A group of students along with Principal and other teachers visited the institution on 28th August 2014 and studied the dark side of human life. The aim of this initiative was to inculcate the values of social responsibility and service mentality in the minds of student trainees.
Onam Celebrations
Onam â the Festival of Kerala, was celebrated on 4th September 2014 in the College Campus with great pleasure. All the teaching & non-teaching staff as well as students whole heartedly enjoyed the occasion. Competitions like Thiruvathirakkali, Vanchipattu and Onapattu enriched the occasion. The celebrations started with a cultural procession which was a feast for the eyes. Onasadya was the centre of attraction. The day ended with various entertainment activities and games.
Teacherâs Day Celebrations
Teacherâs day was celebrated in the college campus on 5th September 2014. Formal celebration was inaugurated by Dr. Sunith Kumar, Principal, KUCTE, Kayamkulam. Smt. Chitra I., Assistant Professor in Physical Science delivered the felicitation. All the teachers in the campus as well as nearby educational institutions were honored with a greeting certificate.
External Practical Board Examination
The external practical examination for the standardization of marks for this academic year was during 24 -27 September 2014. The Co-ordinating Chairman was Dr. Mariamma Mathew (Associate Professor, Peet Memorial Training College, Mavelikkara) and the Chairman was Smt. Shyla Sree (Asst. Professor, KUCTE, Adoor) with other nine members in the team. They have observed the classes of all students and conducted the viva-voce. Students as well as the teachers worked very hard for the smooth organizing of the examination. The external board members were very much impressed by the performance of students.
Cleaning Programme
As a part of Clean India Initiative, a cleaning programme was conducted in the college campus on 1st October 2014. All the students as well as teachers participated in the cleaning programme with enthusiasm. The classrooms and the entire campus were cleaned as various groups. Steamed tapioca and chilli chudney prepared by the students were served to all. As part of beautification of the campus, optional vise gardens were also arranged. A prize for the best garden was given to students of Arabic optional.
Inter-training College Elocution Competition
An inter-training College Malayalam elocution competition was held in the college campus on 14th October 2014. Students from various training colleges participated in the competition. Prof. Rajendran and Prof. Radhakrishnan from MSM College acted as judges. The topic given was âTechnology and Educationâ. First prize sponsored by Smt. Hena, Asst. Prof in Education was achieved by Millath College of Teacher Education. Second prize sponsored by Smt. Shimitha Kumary, Asst. Prof in Social Science was achieved by Tessy, KUCTE, Kayamkulam and third prize sponsored by Smt. Chitra, Asst. Prof in Physical science was achieved by Anil Kumar, Fathima Memorial Training College, Mylapore.
Model Examinations â Second Semester
The model examinations for the first semester were conducted during 21-24 October 2014.
Artsâ Festival
Artâs day was celebrated in the campus on 24th and 25th of October 2014. Varieties of competitive programmes were arranged for the student trainees in a house-vise manner to explore their potentialities. Sapphire house won the ever rolling trophy in Arts. Shri. Sharin and Smt. Sulakshana of Sapphire house won the Kala Prathibha and Kala Thilakam titles respectively. The teachers who were in charge of the Arts were â Smt. Sabeena S. and Dr. Smitha J. M.
College Day Celebrations
The college day of the academic year was celebrated on 25th October 2014 in the campus. The function was inaugurated by Adv. V. Mohammad, Chairperson, Kayamkulam Muncipality. The teaching, non-teaching staff, CDC members, students participated the function. Students who won prizes in various arts competitions were given prizes. Students of Mathematics optional won prize for Artâs corner. Shri. Ferraj of Arabic optional was chosen as the Men-Champion and Smt. Anila Raj of Physical Science was chosen as Women champion in sports.
Basic Training Programme on Human Rights
A one-day training programme on Human Rights was organized in the College Auditorium on 29th October 2014. The programme was sponsored by National Human Rights Commission. The function was inaugurated by Sri. Safeerudeen A, Research Officer, SCERT, Trivandrum. Dr. G. N. Sunith Kumar, Principal, KUCTE. Adv. A. Mohan Kumar, Retired Registrar, State Human Rights commission and Sri. Abdulla, CDC âVice President attended the inaugural function. Four thematic sessions based on different areas of Human Rights was arranged for the students. First session was on âAn Introduction on Human Rightsâ was handled by Adv. Mohan Kumar, Retired Registrar, State Human Rights Commission. Second session dealt with âHuman Rights Institutions in Indiaâ was handled by Prof. S. Varghese, Former Member, State Human Rights Commission. Third session was on âWomen rights and child Rightsâ was handled by Fr. Joy James, Chairman, Child Welfare Committee, Trivandrum. The last session was on topic âRights of other Vulnerable groupsâ by Adv. O. Haris, Member, Child Welfare Committee. Dr. Smitha J M., was the convener of the programme and I should specially congratulate her in her efforts in successful conduct of the programme.
Papers were invited in the respective topics and in response, 20 papers were received which was published as a book with ISBN on 21st November 2014.
College Development Council
College Development Committee members for the academic year were Shri. Abdulla, Vice-President, Shri. C. Vijayan Pillai, Auditor, Smt. Bindu S. Nair, Secretary, Shri. Siyar Trikkunnappuzha, Shri. B. Sasidharan Pillai, Smt. Rethi S. Nair, Shri. Muralidhas J., Smt. Kumari Shobha A R., Smt. Sabeena S. & Dr. Smitha J. M were the Executive members and Smt. Jayalekshmy C. L., the Administrative officer. As per the University norms, monthly meeting of CDC were held and with the approval of the University Library Computerization, the purchase of Generator, Laptop, Handycam, Digital Camera, 10 computer tables, 11 fans, 5 tubes, Almirah for Psychology Lab, and Wall cupboard for trophies and the front board maintenance etc. were done using the funds of College Development Council.
The general body meeting of College Development Council was held on 31st October 2014 in the College Auditorium. Smt. Sobha Kumari delivered the welcome speech S.ri. M.
Abdulla, Vice-President, CDC inaugurated the function. Annual report was presented by Smt. Bindu S. Nair, Asst. Prof. in Education. Smt. Jayalakshmy C. L., Administrative Officer, Sri. Vijayan Pillai, Auditor and Sri. Sasidharan, CDC Executive member delivered felicitation. Smt. Sabeena S. delivered vote of thanks.
Apart from these, during this academic year 30 staff meetings and 12 Union meetings were conducted to take decisions about the developmental activities of the college.
Second Semester University B. Ed Degree Examination
The second semester University B. Ed Degree Examinations was held during 11-21 November 2014.
Release of Second Issue of âZestâ
The second issue of the college News Letter âZESTâ is planning to be released at the end of November 2014.
College Magazine
The college magazine is getting ready under the eminent leadership of Smt. Chitra I., the staff editor and Smt. Rajalekshmi, the student editor. The other staff members in the editorial team include Smt. Sabeena, Smt. Kumari Shobha, Smt. Durgalekhsmi, Smt. Shimithakumari and Smt. Neethi S. Lal. Two student members from each optional subject are also included in the team. I extent my best wishes to the entire team for the successful release of this venture â âMashippokkalâ

Participants of various outdoor competitions
- Students of KUCTE, Kayamkulam participated in the âNadaka Kalariâ workshop held at Jameela Beevi college of Teacher Education on 20-21st January 2014.
- Ms. Nazrin and Ms. Zeenath Beevi (Mathematics) participated in âMathzenichâ an Inter University Maths Quiz competition held on 12th February 2014 at Jameela Beevi College of Teacher Education, Kayamkulam and secured fourth position.
- Mr.Nizamuddin and Mr. Riyas (Arabic) participated in the State level seminar on Fostering Scientific Temper organized in connection with National Science day Celebration held on 14th February 2014 at Kerala University College of Teacher Education, Kumarapuram. They also participated in the Quiz and painting competition organized in connection with the seminar.
- Ms. Tessy John (Physical Science) participated and secured second prize in Alappuzha district level Malayalam elocution competition held in connection with Anti Narcotic day celebration organized by Excise department on 23rd June 2014.
- Under the leadership of Lekshmi Krishnan (Physical Science) students of KUCTE, Kayamkulam participated in the Attapookalam competition on 5th September 2014 held at Muthoot Auditorium organized by Bodhi Cultural Society.
- Students of Mathematics optional subject participated in âMath Magicâ a mathematics exhibition held at MSM College, Kayamkulam on 9th October 2014. The event was organized to instigate creative thinking in mathematics.
- Ms. Safeena and Ms.Soorya (Mathematics) participated in the Quiz competition held at KUCTE, Kollam.
- Ms. Bhagyalekshmi (Mathematics) participated in the Debate competition held at Govt. College of Teacher Education, Thycaud, Thiruvananthapuram.
